Los Espiritus - Caldero
I wish I could explain how I discovered this band. It had to be a random Youtube or Spotify recommendation. I find myself drawn to new sounds and bands, and Los Espiritus fits both. Born out of Buenos Aires, Argentina Los Espiritus bring pyschadelic rock fused with latin sounds. All the lyrics are in espanol, so I have no idea what the hell they are about. I mean, here and there I’m able to place phrases and words together to get an idea. But to me that makes the music even more impactful. The ability to project emotion or ideas through sound is what music is about, regardless of the language barrier. At 8 tracks and 40 minute run-time, “Caldero” is definitely worth a listen.
As mentioned earlier, the album is in Spanish. But the singer seems to utilize pop themes as the lyrics, hooks, and choruses all are very catchy. An example of this is the hook on “Cigarros y Tragos”. “Cigarros y Tragos y el asfalto, Cigarros y Tragos…” rinse repeat. Other parts of the album allow the band to shine. They exhibit sounds of classic rock, latin rock, and prog rock. At times the project reminds me of Portugal, The Man, particularly on the track “Destino” Another band that comes to mind is The Mars Volta, particular the guitar work. The breakdown and bass on “Destino” could be mistaken for an Omar Rodriguez-Lopez piece. This also applies to the track “Ola Blanca”, which doubles as my favorite track on the album. Part in thanks to the eccentric work the band takes on towards the end of the track. I’d imagine their live shows include a lot of this expansion of themes in solos and breakdowns. The band has the talent to take the sounds all over the place while remaining centered and grounded through the bass. I highly recommend this album for any prog rock fan, even if the lyrics aren’t understandable. We live in a global community, learn Espanol.
