Khruangbin - Father Bird, Mother Bird

As the season changes we welcome more Sun and nature seems to come alive. Flowers bloom and blossom, the Sun beams through the sky providing life outside, and most notable for me is the flock of birds that are making their way through the sky. Seeing the variety of dinosaur ancestors this morning inspired a listen of the 4th track off of Khruangbin’s “Mordechai” album, “Father Bird, Mother Bird”.

According to guitarist Mark Spear, the song was inspired by a family of birds the band watched grow during the recording of the album.

”When we recorded 'Mordechai,' most nights we would retreat to the front porch to wind down. Each night, we would watch a pair of love birds fly around together and retreat to their nest on a ledge. One night, the male was flapping his wings and screaming. We thought he'd lost his lady bird.

The next night, however, we realized, he wasn't upset; he was celebrating the birth of their three baby birds. For the rest of the session, he would sleep on the ledge just outside the nest so his lady and babies could be comfortable in their home. We watched the mother and father bird teach the babies how to fly.

This song is dedicated to that family of birds."

Though there aren’t any lyrics in the track, it is still composed in the typical chorus, verse, chorus, verse format of most songs. The first 12 seconds are presented as the intro with the guitar and bass in sync, before breaking off into the “verse” of the song where Speer once again plays the guitar with an almost lyrical tone. Being inspired by the family of birds, one can only imagine what the lyrics might be. What I hear could be thought of as a parents dedication to their babies. Promising a life of learning, protection, and devotion. The outro is the same as the intro, and sounds almost like a parent exulting the release of their child into adulthood, much like a bird that learns how to fly and leaves their nest of origin.
